Pregnancy Test (Beta hCG)
A blood test that checks for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone the placenta makes during pregnancy.
Also known as
- Beta hCG
- hCG blood test
What it measures
- Whether hCG is present (qualitative test)
- The exact amount of hCG (quantitative test)
Why a doctor may order it
It is used to find out whether you are pregnant. A quantitative test that measures the exact amount of hCG is sometimes used by a doctor to monitor an early pregnancy, for example when there is a higher risk of miscarriage, or to look into an ectopic or molar pregnancy.
What it helps evaluate
It can confirm a pregnancy. Doctors use quantitative results together with other tests and your history — the number on its own does not tell how a pregnancy is going.
Preparation
No special preparation is needed for a blood test. Fertility medicines can affect the result — tell your doctor if you are taking them.
Fasting
No fasting is needed.
Important considerations
- Home urine tests also check for hCG; if you did a home test, your provider may repeat it to confirm.
- An ectopic pregnancy can be a medical emergency.
Discuss results with your doctor
If you may be pregnant, see a doctor about antenatal care. Pain or bleeding in early pregnancy needs prompt medical attention.
