Why a doctor may order it
In women they may be used to look into infertility, irregular or stopped periods, or whether perimenopause or menopause may have begun. In men they may be used to look into infertility or a low sperm count. In children and teens they can help find out whether a medical disorder is causing early or late puberty.
What it helps evaluate
They can help a doctor look at how the ovaries, testicles or pituitary gland are working. They are usually read together with other hormone tests.
Preparation
Women who have periods may need to be tested at a specific time in their menstrual cycle, because levels change through the month. Some medicines and supplements can affect results — tell your provider about everything you take.
Fasting
Fasting is not usually needed. Follow the instructions you are given.
Important considerations
- If you are 45 or older, testing usually is not needed to tell whether menopause has begun, because high levels are a normal sign of perimenopause and menopause.
- Doctors often order FSH and LH together, sometimes with estrogen, testosterone or progesterone.
Discuss results with your doctor
Talk to a doctor about your symptoms and about what your results mean — a single result is not a diagnosis. See a doctor promptly for severe or worsening symptoms.
