What it measures

Why a doctor may order it

A doctor may ask for it if you have symptoms of iron levels that are too low or too high, or as a routine check. Low iron may not cause symptoms until it is very low.

What it helps evaluate

It can help a doctor check whether iron levels are low or high. Some people are more likely to have low iron — for example people with heavy periods, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and frequent blood donors.

Preparation

If you have questions about how to prepare, ask your provider.

Fasting

Your provider may ask you to fast for 12 hours before the test, which is usually done in the morning.

Important considerations

Discuss results with your doctor

Talk to a doctor about your symptoms and about what your results mean — a single result is not a diagnosis. See a doctor promptly for severe or worsening symptoms.
