Also known as
- C-reactive protein
What it measures
- C-reactive protein level
Why a doctor may order it
A doctor may ask for it if you have symptoms of a bacterial infection, to check for a condition that causes inflammation, or to monitor an infection or long-term condition or its treatment.
What it helps evaluate
High CRP can be linked to infections and inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, among others — so it is one clue among many.
Preparation
Some medicines can affect results, including magnesium and anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin. Tell your provider about supplements and medicines, and don't stop prescription medicines without talking to them.
Fasting
No fasting is mentioned for a CRP test. Ask your provider or the lab if you are unsure.
Important considerations
- CRP shows that inflammation may be present; a doctor works out why.
Discuss results with your doctor
Talk to a doctor about your symptoms and about what your results mean — a single result is not a diagnosis. See a doctor promptly for severe or worsening symptoms.
