Blood health & anaemia

Tests that look at blood cells and iron

Blood health & anaemia

A blood count shows the number and size of your blood cells. Doctors may add iron tests, vitamin B12 or a look at the cells under a microscope when they are looking into anaemia or other blood conditions. These tests don't diagnose anything on their own, and this isn't a recommendation to take any of them — a doctor decides which are relevant for you.

CBC (Complete Blood Count)

A group of blood tests that measure the number and size of the different cells in your blood.

Vitamin B12

A blood test that measures how much vitamin B12 is in your blood.

Iron Studies

Blood tests that check the levels of iron in your body.

Ferritin Test

A blood test that measures ferritin, a protein that binds to iron and stores it in your body.

Peripheral Blood Smear

A test in which a drop of blood is spread on a glass slide, stained, and looked at under a microscope to see the size, shape and number of your blood cells.

Speak with your doctor

Unusual paleness, breathlessness, easy bruising or bleeding should be discussed with a doctor.
