Also known as
- Blood typing
- ABO Rh
What it measures
- ABO blood group
- Rh factor
Why a doctor may order it
Blood typing is done so a person can safely donate blood or receive a blood transfusion. It is not a test for illness.
What it helps evaluate
It tells you your blood group. Before any transfusion, the donated blood must closely match the patient's blood type.
Preparation
No special preparation is needed.
Fasting
No fasting is needed.
Important considerations
- A blood-group report is for your information. It doesn't decide whether you can donate — the blood centre's doctor does that on the day.
Discuss results with your doctor
Talk to a doctor about your symptoms and about what your results mean — a single result is not a diagnosis. See a doctor promptly for severe or worsening symptoms.
