What it measures

Why a doctor may order it

They are mainly used to help find problems with the pancreas, especially pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). A doctor may ask for them if you have symptoms such as pain in the upper belly that may spread to the back, nausea and vomiting, fever, or yellowing of the skin and eyes.

What it helps evaluate

High levels can be a sign of a problem with the pancreas or with other digestive conditions, but the tests cannot identify the cause on their own.

Preparation

Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before an amylase test. Your provider may also ask you to fast for about two hours (amylase) or for 8 to 12 hours (lipase). Tell your provider about your medicines and supplements.

Fasting

Fasting is sometimes needed — the time differs between the two tests. Follow the instructions you are given.

Important considerations

Discuss results with your doctor

Severe or persistent belly pain, especially with vomiting or fever, needs prompt medical attention.
