Allergy Blood Test (IgE)
A blood test that measures allergy-causing antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) to help find out whether you have an allergy.
Also known as
- Allergy profile
- IgE test
What it measures
- Total IgE — the overall amount of IgE antibodies
- Specific IgE — how much IgE your body makes in response to a single allergen
Why a doctor may order it
Allergy blood tests are used to help find out whether you have an allergy. It is normal to have small amounts of IgE in your blood; an allergic reaction increases it.
What it helps evaluate
It can help a doctor look into whether an allergy may be behind your symptoms. A total IgE result doesn't show what you are allergic to or how serious the allergy may be.
Preparation
You don't need special preparation, but you may be asked to stop certain medicines such as antihistamines. Tell your provider about everything you take, and don't stop any medicine unless told to.
Fasting
No fasting is needed.
Important considerations
- The amount of IgE measured doesn't predict how serious an allergy may be.
Discuss results with your doctor
Trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe reaction after eating or a sting needs emergency medical care.
